Case study – Accelerated formulation of an epoxy resin for application under thermomechanical constraints
Sector: Confidential
Customer type: Group
Contact department: Works
The Customer wishes to replace a resin epoxy used for application under thermomechanical stresses. Following preliminary work with a formulator that was unsuccessful, the Customer calls on RHEONIS to identify and evaluate the most suitable ingredients and formulate a product with performance that is at least equivalent to the target product.
Predictive instrumental techniques at the service of accelerated formulation
RHEONIS has implemented its accelerated formulation method based on the instrumental simulation of application conditions and its formulation know-how. The project was carried out using a collaborative approach, with intermediate progress points having made it possible to guide developments and arbitrate choices as the results were produced.
The main stages of the study:
- Adjustment of instrumental protocols to the targeted properties and characterization of the target product profile
- Sourcing of candidates and technical benchmarking of ready-to-use formulas
- Selection of promising candidates and accelerated formulation
- Reporting, technical exchanges and supplier selection
- Collaboration with the single supplier to finalize a single-supplier formula

An epoxy resin developed in a short time
The use of predictive instrumental techniques in rheometry makes it possible to effectively quantify the performance of the resin from the different angles of its application (setting time, mechanical resistance, sliding, viscosity, …) and thus guide the formulation process. Benchmarking the performance of off-the-shelf solutions offered by resin suppliers made it possible to select the best candidates while maintaining the client's anonymity. Thus, RHEONIS was able to offer a formula in 5 months. Adjustments to the formula are in progress to converge towards a single-supplier formulation.
The advantages of the accelerated formulation approach using predictive techniques
Objective quantification of targeted properties
Significantly faster results than usual approaches
Comparative evaluation of supplier solutions
Low material consumption
