Case study – R&D study in problem solving and design optimization of vacuum pump for powders

Sector: Equipment

Customer type: Group

Service contact: R&D

The Customer encounters problems of damage to the suction pumps of powders and called on RHEONIS to better understand the associated phenomena in order to improve the design of the pumps.

Combining expertise in pumps and powders

In response to this request, RHEONIS implemented its coupled expertise of pumps, powders and instrumental techniques for their study.

The stages of the study were therefore as follows:

  1. Participation in a dismantling of pumps problematic
  2. Analysis of pump designs and technical expertise of the problem
  3. Behavioral study of powders (true flowability, compressibility, adhesion and friction to the wall) in particular with regard to thermal
  4. Complementary particle size measurements and SEM imaging
  5. Conclusions on the phenomena and operational recommendations

Understanding the behavior of powders to optimize equipment

This study provided the Customer with an instrumental quantification of the behaviors at the origin of the problems encountered, thus making it possible to identify their origin in order to draw from them ways of improving pump designs.

The advantages of characterizing the behavior of powders

Data representative of real phenomena

Interpretation of influencing factors and causes of problems

Operational recommendations

Possibility to test end-user powders in advance
