Case study – Expertise/Advice on feasibility in innovation engineering of a connected device for cosmetic application

Sector: Cosmetics

Type of client: Start-up

Contact service: Project leaders

The Customer has developed an innovative concept of a connected device in the field of “on-demand” cosmetics and wishes to assess the technical feasibility of its project with a view to its industrialization. He asks RHEONIS to bring him his expertise in matters of behavior of matter and engineering of mechanical devices.

Technical-scientific expertise and preliminary engineering project

RHEONIS has put its expertise in cosmetic products at the service of the Client pasty, processes thermomechanical techniques as well as his practice of pre-project engineering methods and sourcing.

As part of the feasibility study, the following actions were carried out:

  1. Analysis of the Customer's need, the contexts of use of the device and the preliminary specifications for the development of an adapted service
  2. Functional analysis: brainstorming to identify the main functions and constraints, reflection on the technical issues and solution options
  3. Behavioral study of the first formulations produced, various application tests, estimation of the orders of magnitude of the engineering constraints (flow rates, power, etc.) according to the elements of the preliminary specifications
  4. Issuance of an interim report of principle opinion with functional specifications, technical strategies, points of vigilance, critical points and room for maneuver in terms of conditions of use
  5. Discussion with the Client on the necessary and possible adjustments to the specifications
  6. Additional research on technical options, additional estimates for advice on feasibility
  7. Conclusions on the feasibility of the Client project taking into account the possible adjustments to the specifications, identification of the risks and necessary R&D procedures

Moving from marketing concept to concrete feasibility

This study firstly enabled the Client to become aware of the concrete technical issues underlying his innovation project. In particular, certain constraints imposed by the conditions of use initially envisaged appeared problematic, justifying compromises modifying the initial specifications.

The functional and technical analysis made it possible to evaluate the options of functional architectures and to converge towards technical options fed by quantitative and qualitative estimates. Some critical stages have been identified, requiring additional R&D actions essential before any industrialization.

R&D engineering of cosmetic application device

Scientific expertise of phenomena (physical, mechanical, rheological, etc.) related to the behavior of materials

Pre-project analysis methods to identify technical constraints and consider classic or innovative options

An excellent knowledge of technological bricks for the development of technical specifications

Tools for measuring and costing technical constraints

R&D engineering know-how for the development of prototypes
