Case study – R&D study in support of improvement of thermomechanical application of PET film on metal support

Sector: Packaging

Customer type: Group

Service contact: R&D

The Customer wishes to optimize a process ofapplication of PET film on a metal support and calls on RHEONIS to assess the relative performance of different supplier films and determine the optimal process conditions.

Thermomechanical behavior and application of PET film

RHEONIS has implemented its expertise in instrumental techniques and the thermomechanical behavior of plastic films.

The main stages of the study:

  1. Development of a specific measurement geometry adaptable to rheometer
  2. Adjustment of protocols
  3. Study of thermomechanical behavior of monolayer and bilayer plastic films
  4. Study of instrumental simulation of application on metallic support
  5. Recommendations of favorable application conditions

The design of a specific geometry to representatively simulate the Customer's application conditions is at the heart of this project. Such an approach made it possible (1) to carry out an effective benchmark of the candidate films under controlled conditions adapted to the conditions of application, (2) to drastically limit the quantity of industrial tests - which consume a lot of material for each test - and ( 3) to extract recommendations on the most favorable test conditions for the Customer issue.
