Case study – Formulation and evaluation of binder in instrumented micro-granulator

Agribusiness

Customer type: Group

Service contact: R&D

The Customer encounters problems with the segregation of its powders and wishes to identify a suitable binder for its granulation. He therefore calls on RHEONIS to identify the appropriate binders and their optimal conditions for implementation by granulation.

Development of a granulation micropilot on a rheometer

RHEONIS has therefore developed for the needs of the project a granulation micro-pilot from the powder cell with which one of its rheometers is equipped. This unique device makes it possible to inject and mix the binder under controlled conditions and to quantify the impact of granulation on segregation as well as on the physical and rheological properties of the powder.

Thus, the stages of the project were as follows:

  • Preliminary bibliographic research
  • Design & Development of the granulation micro-pilot
  • Formulation of binders and adjustment of injection conditions and mixed for granulation
  • Quantification of segregation properties and
  • Adjustment of formulations for optimization
  • Recommendation report for industrialization

Recommend both binder and granulation conditions while limiting costs

RHEONIS' approach made it possible to identify both the optimal binder to limit segregation and the appropriate conditions for its implementation, thus making it possible to formulate operational recommendations for the industrialization of granulation. The instrumented micro-granulator saves material and limits the number of tests and the associated cost to converge towards the optimal solution.
