Case study – Polyurethane resin casting and forming process optimization study

Sector: Engineering plastics

Client type: SME

Contact department: R&D / Process

The Customer encounters variabilities in its casting and forming process for its polyurethane resin products, the origin of which it wishes to understand and identify ways of improvement. Chemical analyzes did not show any particular variability, so he called on RHEONIS to investigate the thermomechanical dimension of his problem.

Instrumental simulation of polyurethane resin setting

In response to the request, RHEONIS implemented its instrumental process simulation approach on a rheometer and its expertise in the thermomechanical behavior of resin.

The stages of the study were therefore as follows:

  1. Adjustment of a temperature mixing protocol for polyols, chain extender and hardener
  2. Resin setting monitoring by viscoelastic rheometric techniques
  3. Interpretation of measurement data and interpretation of sources of variability with regard to the Customer's process configuration
  4. Operational recommendations

Quickly determine possible process optimizations without mobilizing the production tool

The study made it possible to qualify the origin of the variability experienced by the Customer in terms of thermomechanical behavior during the setting of the resin. The study of the impact of controlled variations of the control parameters made it possible to quickly identify process conditions optimizing the process, without having to mobilize the Customer's production tool or to explore configurations by trial and error.

Instrumental simulation of application serving the optimization of thermomechanical processes

No mobilization of the production tool in the investigation phase

Low material consumption

Short completion time

Study of control factors

Scientific determination of favorable conditions
